SAE J2842: design criteria and certification
The current revision of SAE J2842 establishes a design-criteria and certification framework for OEM mobile air-conditioning evaporators and service replacements used with R-1234yf and related refrigerants. It exists in part because evaporators sit inside the passenger cabin.

A baseline is not a root cause
EPA acceptability listings and SAE design standards establish the regulatory and engineering context in which modern evaporators operate. They do not establish that any particular BMW evaporator was noncompliant, and they do not explain why any reported BMW evaporator failed.
Claims and theories concerning refrigerant-related evaporator corrosion appear in secondary automotive sources. AutoDefect has not identified sufficient primary-source evidence establishing R-1234yf as the cause of reported G-chassis BMW evaporator failures. Status last reviewed: August 8, 2026.
